Rare, rare indeed—it is rare to be born as a human.

Among the countless living beings in the world—including worms, insects, animals, and birds—being born as a human is an extremely rare and precious occurrence. This is because humans alone have been endowed with the noble gift of the “sixth sense,” which enables the cultivation of virtuous qualities and the capacity for rational thought.

Even rarer than that is the act of refraining from causing harm to others.

Many who have attained this rare human birth end up causing harm to other living beings or fellow humans in some way due to their greed, anger, and selfishness.

• Harm through words: Speaking in a way that hurts others’ feelings.
• Harm through actions: Betraying or deceiving others, or inflicting physical suffering upon them.
• Harm through thoughts: Harboring jealousy or ill will towards others in one’s mind.
• Living in this world without causing even the slightest harm to anyone—whether through words, actions, or thoughts—under any circumstance, is the most difficult feat of all.
Being born as a human is significant in itself. However, the true success of a human life lies not necessarily in performing grand acts of assistance for others, but in living without causing harm to anyone. That is the noblest quality.
